America the Beautiful—and the Leadership It Demands

ree

July 4, 2025

Today, as our nation celebrates its independence, I’m reflecting from right here in Colorado Springs—home to Pikes Peak, the very mountain that inspired the beloved anthem America the Beautiful.

In 1893, as Katharine Lee Bates stood on the summit, she was so moved by the sweeping views of purple mountain majesty and amber waves of grain that she penned words still echoing in our national spirit:

“America! America! God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.”

That call for grace and brotherhood isn’t just poetic—it’s a leadership charge. One I took seriously during my final military assignment right here in Colorado, serving as Deputy Commander of U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM).

At USNORTHCOM, we worked daily to defend the homeland—partnering across the Joint Services, federal agencies like FEMA and CISA, state and local governments, and allied nations. Success didn’t depend on one organization alone—it required unity, trust, and shared purpose. That’s the same kind of leadership our nation needs at every level today.

Freedom Requires More Than Fireworks

Independence Day is a moment to celebrate—but it’s also a moment to evaluate.

True freedom demands selfless leadership, not just in military service or public office, but in our homes, communities, businesses, and churches.

The question I ask myself—and invite you to ask today—is this:

What kind of leader does our freedom require me to be?

Are we building bridges or barriers? Are we leading with humility and courage? Are we lifting others while we lead?

🎉 Coming July 18! 🎉

I’m honored to announce the upcoming release of my new book:

No Limits! Seven Keys to Life, Legacy, and Leadership

In it, I share leadership lessons from decades of service and how we can lead with greater clarity, conviction, and impact in a complex world.

To celebrate the launch, we’ll be offering a special Independence Month discount starting July 18. Stay tuned for details or sign up for updates at generalroper.com

As you enjoy the food, fireworks, and family time today, I encourage you to pause and reflect on the calling of leadership in your own life. Let’s lead in a way that reflects the very best of America the Beautiful.
